WFAE 90.7: Charlotte afterschool program closes over Border Patrol concerns

OurBRIDGE for Kids is suspending its afterschool programs after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were seen at its east Charlotte site on Monday morning. The non-profit provides after-school care to immigrant and first-generation children. Executive Director Sil Ganzo says over 20 Border Patrol agents showed up at the site, though they didn’t enter the building. OurBRIDGE will now redirect its resources to supporting families on an individual basis.

WCNC Charlotte: Charlotte nonprofit for children closes amid Border Patrol presence

Over 20 Border Patrol agents were present at ourBRIDGE for KIDS' east Charlotte site on Monday morning, according to a statement on Instagram, which has led the organization to shut down until further notice.

The organization urged families to stay home in the meantime, and will continue to provide family support.

ourBRIDGE for KIDS provides afterschool programming for refugee and immigrant students in east and south Charlotte.

New York Times: In Charlotte, Border Patrol Arrests Send Families Into Hiding

After Border Patrol agents showed up to an afterschool care facility for immigrant children in Charlotte, N.C., staff members mobilized to deliver food and essentials to local families in hiding. The New York Times spoke to one mother with three children who said they have not left their home in several days.

WBTV:Charlotte afterschool program closes amid Border Patrol operation

OurBridge for Kids, a local non-profit in east Charlotte that provides afterschool programs for children, will be closed until further notice due to the ongoing immigration operation in the city and surrounding areas.

Officials with OurBridge for Kids posted on Instagram on Monday, Nov. 17, and said in part, “Yes, ICE/CBP was at our east sites this morning. Until further notice, our after-school programs will be closed.”

According to the OurBridge for Kids website, they say “they offer services to refugee and immigrant children and their families with the goal of helping them adjust and thrive.”

Border Patrol agents were seen in Charlotte over the past few days as part of their immigration operation “Charlotte’s Web.”
